Saint-Etienne's Cathedral of Limoges
After the destruction of Augustoritum (the old name of Limoges) by the Barbarians, people took refuge around a church.
This first church was built by the bishop Martial during the 3rd century. At this place the cathedral's construction began in 1272 and finished in 1888.
This gothic monument is built like a latin cross and on three levels. All around the cathedral there are gargoyles which allow water to drain off. The steeple has no more roof because it has been destroyed twice already by lightning and people didn't want to build it again.
The cathedral is on Saint-Jacques de Compostelle's way.
